We do not mean the form of greed that expresses itself in the hoarding of money. This continues to this day. Today, because of the standard of living materialism provides those who follow the idea that some is good, more is better, too much is just right, much of the world "goes for the gold".

Competition for resources is a universal instinct and one of the most important factors in biology. These are aspects that most people would agree are harmful. Self-preservation extends beyond the personal to the public, involving family, friends, and even strangers.

Excessive eating leads to bellyaches and obesity. The purpose of a society is to reduce conflict between the members of that society. They can gather more resources, live longer, raise more children in better conditions that can pass on their parents' and ancestors' genes, and generally outstrip any competition that doesn't practice greed.

No amount of TV can make up for lack of human contact. If we all try to live by this rule and keep the commonweal in mind, we cannot go far wrong. In the latter case, such laws are universally applicable, but in the case of human beings they lead eventually to isolation, loneliness, and the destruction of human relationships.
